Adobe Digital Editions is free software required for reading an e-book offline if you are downloading it as a whole book for a loan period (1-7 days) from the library (via one of our e-book providers such as ProQuest).

For other reading options (downloading individual chapters; reading online) and more info on accessing e-books, read our library guide here.

You can install Adobe Digital Editions on your laptop, tablet or phone. When you click to download a whole e-book on ProQuest Ebook Central, (or Ebsco eBook Collection) it will prompt you to install Adobe Digital Editions:

The first time you open a book (which has an .acsm extension) with Adobe Digital Editions, you will be asked to "Authorize Your Computer". Leave the default settings as they are, and note that you only need to enter an Adobe ID and password if you want to transfer the book to another device. If you want to authorize your computer without an Adobe ID, check the box at the bottom left corner of the screen: "I want to Authorize my computer without an ID".
